Tonnta is a celebration of language and place!

The first Tonnta Festival in Galway City was a groundbreaking cultural celebration on St Brigid’s bank holiday weekend, emphasising bilingualism and its value to Galway and making the Irish language more accessible to a diverse audience.

The festival was produced by Milestone Inventive on behalf of Gaillimh le Gaeilge in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, Pleann Teanga Cathair na Gaillimhe, Galway Culture Company and Galway City Council.

Running from February 1st to 4th, the programme featured:

  • Altan at the Townhall Theatre,
  • Liam Ó Maonlaí  at an Taibhdhearc
  • A live interview with the stars of the Beo ar Éigean podcast,
  • Trad Rave at the Róisín Dubh
  • Fire shows from award winning fire show and light performance artists Rogu
  • A Céilí on Eyre Sq
  • Focail na mBan comedy performance in the Róisín Dubh
  • Bilingual Talks & workshops as well as kids events

Most importantly, the festival provided plenty of opportunities to practice your Irish, regardless of how much or how little you know.

Tonnta was a great success and will return in 2025.
